1. 학과 소개

한국학협동과정은 2003년 신설된 석, 박사학위과정으로 국어국문학과, 사회학과, 사학과, 철학과의 학과간 협동을 통해 운영되고 있다. 국어국문학, 사학, 사회학, 민속학, 제주학, 인류학 등 개별 학문 분야를 바탕으로 한 통합학문을 추구하며 이를 통해 한국의 언어？역사？사회？문화？종교 전반에 관한 폭넓은 지식과 연구？분석 능력을 습득한다. 특히 제주 사회의 신화와 역사, 언어, 사회 조직의 특성 등에 대해 깊이 있는 연구를 목적으로 한다.

2. 교육목표

지구화는 지역화와 함께 진행되고 있다. 이러한 추세는 문화적 개방성과 함께 정체성을 추구할 필요성을 증대시킨다. 인류의 보편적 가치 속에서 자기 문화를 반성하고 발전시켜 정체성을 확립해야 할 시대이다. 우리는 이를 위해 한국문화를 더욱 깊게 탐구하고 한국학의 세계적 위상을 정립하여, 우리 문화를 세계에 소개하고 강의할 수 있는 한국학 전공자를 양성하고자 한다.

3. 특징

한국학협동과정은 국문학, 사회학, 사학, 철학, 민속학 등의 학제적 연구를 통해 한국 사회 및 제주 사회와 문화를 종합적으로 이해한다. 특히 제주 지역 사회의 정신적 가치, 환경, 전통과 문화 등을 보존하고 계승하기 위한 특성화된 연구들이 진행되고 있다. 또한 이 과정은 한국학의 세계화를 위하여 한국학의 토대가 되는 한국어교육론을 중시하여, 외국인을 위한 한국어교육에 관한 과목을 다수 설치하고 있다.

4. 진출분야 및 전망

한국학협동과정을 졸업하면 국내외 대학의 한국학과와 각 대학 부설 연구소 및 부설 교육 기관, 박물관, 한국학중앙연구원 등 정부 관련 연구소의 연구원으로 진출이 가능하다. 또한 문화 정책이나 문화산업, 콘텐츠 개발 및 연구 분야로의 진출도 유망하다. 또한 한국의 국제적 위상이 높아짐에 따라 한국어와 한국학 수요가 증대할 것에 대비하여 한국학의 세계화를 위한 한국어교육론 분야를 별도로 두고 있다. 한국학을 수료한 후 외국에 가서 한국학과 한국어교육을 담당할 인재와, 외국 학생이 한국에 와서 한국학을 수료한 후 자국에 돌아가 한국학을 강의할 수 있는 교수를 양성하고자 한다.

1. Introduction

The Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Korean Studies runs an M.A., Ph.D, and unified M.A./Ph.D. courses. Established in 2003, the program aims to unite academic disciplines, such as Korean language and literature, history, folklore, Jeju studies, and anthropology. In the program, the departments of Korean language and literature, sociology, history, and philosophy organize cooperative study opportunities to help build broader knowledge, research capabilities, and analytical skills in the language, history, society, culture, and religions of Korea.

2. Aims

Globalization has grown concurrently with localization. The ongoing trend augments the need for maintaining individual identities while pursuing open-mindedness towards other cultures. Now is the time to reestablish the identities of different cultures by introspecting and advancing them in the context of universal human values. To this end, the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Korean Studies attempts a more in-depth exploration into Korean culture and establishes global recognition of Korean studies, thereby equipping its majors with the ability to introduce and teach the Korean culture to the world.

3. Highlights

The program educates its students to comprehensively understand Korean and Jeju societies as well as their cultures through interdisciplinary studies in Korean literature, sociology, philosophy, folklore, etc. The specialized objects of research that are addressed in the program particularly aim to conserve and pass down the spiritual values, environment, tradition, and culture of the local communities of Jeju Island. The program also highlights theories of Korean language education to lay the groundwork for globalizing Korean studies, while offering different subjects on teaching the Korean language to foreigners.

4. Careers

The Korean studies majors find career opportunities in departments of Korean studies in colleges at home and abroad, in research centers and education institutes affiliated with universities, and in government-related institutes such as museums and the Academy of Korean Studies. Other potential fields of study include cultural policies, cultural industries, content development, and content research. Our program offers a separate course on theories of Korean language education to prepare for an increasing demand for Korean language education and Korean studies amidst the growing recognition of South Korea in the international arena. We expect the Korean and foreign graduates who have completed our program to be able to give lectures on Korean studies and the Korean language for students overseas.
