사회학과 (Department of Sociology)

1. 학과 소개

사회학은 급변하는 현대사회의 구조와 현상, 인간 행위에 대한 다각적 이해를 통해 각 사회의 특정 부분에 대한 실용적 지식보다는 사회가 움직이는 기본 원리를 과학적으로 분석하는 학문이다. 사회학과는 1978년 ‘지역개발부 지역사회개발전공’으로 시작하여 1981년에 ‘사회학과’로 개편됐다. 1995년부터 석사과정이, 2003년부터 박사과정이 개설됐고, 2019년까지 석사 27명, 박사 5명을 배출했다.

2. 교육목표

사회학과의 주된 교육목표는 사회의 여러 현상을 체계적으로 이해하고, 비판적인 분석능력을 함양함으로써 급변하는 현대사회에서 발생하는 여러 문제에 비판적으로 접근하고 창조적으로 대응하는 전문인력을 양성하는 데 있다. 대학과 사회를 연계하는 전인교육을 통해 지역인재의 전문성과 글로벌/글로컬 역량을 강화하고, 사회 문제를 진단하고 해법과 대안을 제시하기 위한 학문적·실천적 요구에도 부응해 왔다.

3.  주요 연구분야

사회학은 가족, 경제, 정치, 종교, 사회조직, 환경 등 다양한 분야에서 일어나는 현상과 문제를 서로 연결시켜 종합적으로 이해하고, 어떤 문제에도 대처할 수 있는 사고능력과 상상력을 기르는데 유용한 학문분야이다. 때문에 사회학은 순수 학문적 성격에 한정되지 않고, 그 영역을 꾸준히 확대하는 실천 학문적 성격을 동시에 가지고 있다..

4. 진출분야 및 전망

사회학 전공자들은 제반 사회현상에 대한 종합적인 판단력과 사회 구조에 대한 통찰력, 사회 조건의 변화에 대한 적응력을 습득하기 때문에 급변하는 현대사회에 창조적으로 대응할 수 있는 지식을 습득할 수 있다. 졸업 후에는 언론사, 출판사, 광고, 기획, 여론조사기관, 사회복지 및 사회정책관련 기관, 대학, 사회단체(NGO), 기업체, 정당, 정부기관 등으로 진출하여 활동할 수 있다.

1. Introduction

Sociology is a discipline that allows a multifaceted understanding of the structures, phenomena, and human actions found in rapidly changing modern society. Based on this understanding, sociologists scientifically analyze the basic principles of how societies work, going beyond pragmatic knowledge on certain areas of each society. The Department of Sociology of Jeju National University started in 1978 as the Local Community Development Major under the Faculty of Local Development. In 1981, the major was reorganized into the Department of Sociology. Its master’s program was first offered in 1995, followed by the Ph.D. program in 2003. As of 2019, the department’s postgraduate programs have graduated 27 researchers with M.A. degrees and 5 with Ph.D.s.

2. Aims

The department’s ultimate goal is to foster specialized intellectuals who critically approach and creatively address different issues of rapidly changing modern society. To this end, the department educates its students to build capacity for a systematic understanding and critical analysis of diverse social phenomena. It has strengthened the expertise and global/glocal capabilities of local talent by connecting the college with society through well-rounded education. Additionally, it has responded to the academic and practical demands for diagnosing social issues and suggesting solutions and alternatives.

3. Highlights

Sociology is effective in comprehensively relating and understanding the phenomena and problems that occur in different social spheres such as family, economy, politics, religion, organization, and environment, while building the thinking and imaginative skills to counteract different types of issues. Thus, sociology by nature is not confined to the purely academic field but steadily broadens its horizon to practical areas.

4. Postgraduate career options

By the time they complete the sociology major, students will be able to comprehensively judge overall social phenomena, discern social structures, and adapt to changing social conditions, thereby responding to rapidly changing modern society more creatively. After graduation, many of the sociology majors have found positions with journalism and media companies, publishing houses, advertising firms, project planners, public opinion polling organizations, social welfare and policy agencies, colleges, NGOs, enterprises, political parties, government agencies, etc.
